Volunteers hard at work as big party approaches

A brief history of the group's foundation and growth

Trish Robson and Beverley Fletcher set up the Aldershot Garrison Special Needs Group after their own experiences of caring for special needs children. The aim was to provide a meeting place and support group for other parents and carers of special needs children. The group also arranges trips and special events are organised including an annual Christmas party please see events. Although originally established for the military community, the first of its kind within the British Army, it soon became clear that there was also a need within the civilian community, as no similar group existed.

Today help and support is offered twice a week (during term time) to families and carers of all children, teenagers and adults with special needs. The group founders, Trish Robson and Beverley Fletcher, attend many local and military meetings to raise awareness of the group and promoting its vital work.

The group receives no external funding so all finances are generated by fundraising activities including selling raffle tickets, sponsored marathons, endurance events and donations. We have strong support from the Army and GarrisonRadio 102.5FM as well as many other Link to Garrison FMvolunteers who give their time. Over several years the hard work of the group founders and others have ensured the growth and continued success. Acting as a local parent-networking group on behalf of 'Contact-A-Family' (the national registered charity), the group is also registered with Rushmoor Voluntary Services.
